Some Pics of the Day

All in all it was a good day; Jari took Reserve Grand in the Senior Showmanship class, and Angle got a blue ribbon in the ewe lamb class.
I think these three stold the show though.
At almost three weeks old, these little goats were adored by everyone, I think baby goats are about the cutest babies in the livestock world :)

More later!

Here We Are, and State Fair

In Winnemucca!

Tomorrow is the big day, although Jari's market lamb didn't make weight, so she wont be showing her, she still has Angle in Showmanship and as a spring ewe lamb.

This is what I have been working on since last weekend, a 50/50 merino/silk blend...
And this is what it looks like now! The real colors are closer to the pic below. I am going to make a scarf for a friend that I was supposed to do over a year ago. I Navajo plyed it too cut down on the 'barber pole' affect, it worked out very nicely! It looks much better in person.
Here are the girls just before we showed last weekend, dont they look great!
This skein was one I showed here on my blog a few months ago, it was right after SpinOff came out with the article about cableing your yarn. It got Reserve Grand in its division, then I sent it off with (forgive me I cant remember her name!) one of the other women in the guild and she is going to make fingerless mitts out of it for me. Too exciting! I am going to have a practical use for something I spun! I know, Ive made other scarfs, but would you believe that people refuse to use them because they think they are too special? My sister wont wear the one I gave her because she thinks it will get ruined. My husband wont wear the one I gave him because he thinks it will get dirty; the only one that wears what I have made them is my Mom. Thank you Mom!
So since I left that skein at the fair, it wasnt around when I took this picture. Here are all the things I entered in the fair, and the ribbons they brought. The yellow skein is so pretty, I was really suprised it didn't do better than it did, but it got beat out by my cable and a very pretty boucle. The dark object there is the scarf I posted about a while back it took best in division, the one I made from over dyed grey romeldale cross with the beads, and you all saw the multicolored one just last month I think it got 1st in the tunis category. The orange skein is also tunis, I didnt know what to do with it, so I put some green dye, some blue dye and some yellow, didn't like it and over dyed it red. Had the judge scratching her head apparently (was off washing sheep during the judging) as to how it was done. It was a lot of fun and I thank all who put so much effort into having this for us.
Thanks CSSW!!!

To Show, or Not to Show...

I think I have a few Shetland people that visit this blog; I have a question for you all, I know Mim has the same problem I do with her location, no one around here shows Shetlands. Well, no one around here shows Tunis either. The question is, is it hard for you to find a place where your sheep are judged as a breed rather than a piece of meat?
This is the problem I seem to be facing. It doesn't matter which class I put my Tunis in, they are up against bigger badder sheep. We went to the fair this last weekend, had an OK time, although my daughter and I didn't stop arguing until the last day, got our butts soundly and roundly kicked by the suffolks in the show ring with us, and came home.

I suppose we are going to have to wait until there are more tunis around so we can start our own class, but until that happens, I'm done. I didn't even take any pictures, well not many and they are on my camera which is at home (shhhhh! dont tell anybody, I'm at work hehehe) and my home puter is down with the flu. Or something.

But there are a couple pics of me, the girls and one of our red heads at Amy's Flickr, lots of great pics, just keep looking!

We pulled the Milk Thistle. I wasn't home when the deed was done, but from what I hear it kind of came out with a 'pop', then it was burned. I get the whole 'noxious weed' thing, but I miss it. You have to admit that is a beautiful purple!

This weekend is the Humboldt Co Livestock Show and Sale, Jari will be showing Angle (the hamp ewe we bought in Ohio) and Mo (the market lamb). I promise I will take pics of the show and share, I am almost sure I wont be as trepiditious as I was at state so I will be more mindful of the camera. The week after that is the Lander Co Fair, we will hopefully be doing a petting pen, then on September 12, 13 and 14 is the CSSW Retreat, which I thoroughly intend on being at.

My Drive...

The last time I did this, I only worked ten mins away from my house. Now its a 45 minute drive and although I loath it, there is some great scenery. Some of you many not think so, but being a desert rat, I love it :)
(Scuze the bugs on the windshield...)

Sunrise from my porch.
North of I-80; about 20 mins from home.
Looking West from the top of Golconda Summit, about half way to work
Just coming off the summit facing North West.
North of I-80 again, about 15 mins from work.
Looking towards Paradise Valley here, everyone there grows hay.
If you biggify this one, you can see the path of the Humboldt river; in this area, the ground is so flat that the river meanders worse than almost anywhere else on its way to the Sink in the valley where Lovelock lies. It floods almost every year but the cattle dont seem to mind, it is a very lush area.
Winnemucca Mountain; to the North of Winnemucca
This is in the mountain range to the left of the freeway, but at this point, Im not possitive the direction, maybe South East.
The town is here somewhere, its actually a very nice place, but I've never had the urge to live here...

We got a sheep sheared last night, I am hoping to get them both done before we leave so I dont have to take the horse trailer. If I get them both sheared, I wont have to take the shearing stand and can haul them in the back of the truck. It will save on gas as well as nerves because I have yet to replace all the tires on the trailer and I have NO idea how old they are.

Little Lucille did very well on the stand, for all her bull headedness everywhere else, but then her half sister Aubrey did great in the petting pen last year even though she thought she was a wild child. When we brought them in I thought they were going to have hay bellies, but Lucille is slim and trim, I will try to get pics up before I leave, and then more when I come back.

Wish us luck!

I Found It!

Found my camera charger! And I've been taking pics all weekend :)

And here is the weed I was so jazzed about! It is a thistle! Yeah, I know its a weed, but its a big weed with pretty purple flowers all ensconced in those wicked looking barbs! My DM says I should rip it out, shes probably right :)

Gloriosa Daisies...
Shasta Daisies...
Rose...
Sweet Williams...
Sansa and Jack-Jack...
This is a three ply tunis yarn I am entering in the Fair...

Not sure yet if I like the colors; I might over dye it with blue or red.
Off to work! Have a great day!

It Just Doesn't Seem to Happen!

Every week, I think "I am going to take pictures of this and that and the other thing, to put on my blog" and it never seems to happen! I get busy and/or lazy, not sure which; of course it could be the kids, or the DH or the menagerie, the house, the bills... :)
We had a sick sheep over the weekend, yes it was the really expensive one! Of course!
She was a little bloated and in a lot in pain, we gave her mineral oil, B-complex, and probios, put her in her own little pen with nothing but alfalfa and electrolites, whetever it was something we did helped, she started with scours within a couple hours then started eating and drinking again; last night her stool was firmed back up a bit and she is doing much better. It was rather scary to be honest! I am pretty sure I will never pay that much for a sheep again.

Jari came in last night after she had been wandering around tossing a base ball (she is grounded for life, I finally get to spend some time with her!!!! YAY!!!), and said I had to come look at this plant on the other side of the garage! I got my shoes on, although I was happily spinning, since I am the one that wants to spend time with her, and went out. There is a really interesting plant back there! I will definitely get some pictures up tonight or tomorrow, I was really surprised at the size and colors of this weed, I have never seen one so big.

Anticipation!
